When Chicago-based musician Spitzer Space Telescope is not fiercely strumming his guitar and belting shanties out his lungs, he’s an enormously devoted painter who is preparing for upcoming graduate school to continue his studies in the fine arts. So New York City was lucky Sunday night when the troubadour played a one-off show at Manhattan’s Living Room while stopping through the area.
THE BOMBER JACKET has been a supporter of all-things Spitzer since his early musician days in Boston, where he fostered the folk music community alongside the Mama Bird hootenanny team that has since moved out to Portland, Oregon.
But Spitzer still plays music, and he still puts on an excellent show.
At Sunday’s concert, he graced the audience with his usual cheeky grin and ballsy jokes. He poked fun at everyone in the audience (even the sound engineer), but not before cracking witticisms about himself. Armed with his old acoustic guitar and his deep, roaring voice, Spitzer played just under an hour’s worth of music, sometimes strumming until his pic flew out of his hand and sometimes standing tall with his guitar at his feet as he’d sing an original a cappella tune.
